National League Cup: Raiders 2 Invicta 5

Shortstaffed Raiders put up a brave fight but could not deny Dynamos at Lee Valley last night.

Beaten on the Isle of Wight the night before, Danny Marshall’s men fell behind in the sixth minute as Danny Hammond raced clear to beat Michael Gray.

The visitors doubled their lead with a powerplay goal from Callum Fowler, early in the middle period, but Frankie Harvey replied soon after.

Raiders joy was shortlived, though, as Andy Smith restored Invicta’s two-goal cushion just seven seconds later and Arran Strawson made it 4-1 just past the midway mark.

Grant Taylor grabbed a second for the hosts in the 35th minute before joining Billy Phillips and Nicky Lewis in the penalty box late in the period.

But the scoreline remained unchanged until the final minute when Elliott Knell netted on a Dynamos powerplay, with David Oliver serving a slashing minor for the home side.

Scorers: Harvey 1 Taylor 1 Smith 0+1 Davis 0+1 Klima 0+1.

Wight 7 Raiders 6

Raiders lost out by the odd goal in 13 at Ryde on Saturday.

Nathan Taylor gave the hoss a seventh-minute lead, but Frankie Harvey levelled soon after, then set up Jakub Klima for a go-ahead goal 18 seconds late.

Corey Watkins squared matters before the first break, but the visitors regained the lead through 16-year-old defenceman Charlie Phillips, less than 90 seconds into the middle session.

Wight player-coach Jeremy Cornish got his side back on terms, then saw Steven Osman put them 4-3 up, only for Klima to haul Raiders level again at the midway mark.

Tempers boiled over soon after, with AJ Smith clashing with Richard Nembhard, who received a match penalty for spearing.

Kieran Annis beat Michael Gray with 92 seconds left in the period to give Wight the lead heading back to the lockerrooms, but Harvey had the next goal of the night to make it 5-5 with a little over 10 minutes remaining.

A tripping call against Craig Tribe gave Danny Marshall’s men a powerplay chance but Wight edged ahead with a shorthanded goal from Alex Barker and gave themselves a two-goal cushion when Daniel Pye netted at 55:25.

Klima completed his hat-trick with three minutes left but despite pulling Gray for an extra skater the visitors could not find a last-gasp leveller and returned home empty-handed after a brave effort.

Scorers: Klima 3+2 Harvey 2+2 C Phillips 1 Marshall 0+2 Taylor 0+1.
