Oliver reflects on postponement

Raiders defenceman David Oliver has revealed his frustration at seeing Sunday’s clash with Streatham postponed.

The National League Division One fixture fell victim to problems with the ice at Lee Valley Arena and the unexpected night off left Oliver disappointed.

He said: “It was a big shame not playing this weekend. It was a big game for both teams but sometimes these things happen.

“This one for me was more gutting after a heavy defeat to the Isle of Wight the weekend before. It’s best to play as soon as possible to get back on track.

Now having to wait until next weekend, that loss can play on your mind.”

Raiders were trailing the Isle of Wight 10-0 after two periods of their cup match the previous weekend, when play was abandoned due to an injury to goalie Michael Gray.

Danny Marshall’s men return to action with another cup match against Invicta on Saturday week (March 8), before visiting Streatham in the league the following night.

And Oliver believes the wait could work in their favour, adding: “We are a strong team, with strong heads on our shoulders, so we have a good two weeks of training and plan to get back on track at Invicta.

“Not having games this weekend has come at the right time for us. With only a few games left in the season, rest is very important for the short team we have.

“I know most of the guys will say it will be nice spending time with the family and loved ones!

“But we will all be ready to fight for that fourth place and be ready for the games up and coming in two weeks time.”

*Former Romford junior Denis Bell shone between the pipes as Milton Keynes Thunder celebrated their first win of the season at the weekend.

The basement boys had only taken a point from their previous 25 matches – courtesy of a 3-3 draw with Raiders in late October.

But goalie Bell, who is set to represent Great Britain under-18s with another former Romford junior Glenn Billing at the World Championships in Dumfries next month, made 66 saves as Thunder broke their duck with a 3-1 win over Bracknell.
