It was GB’s first medal of the 2014 Games and their first on snow for 20 years and came after Powell, 19, guided visually impaired Etherington to a time of one minute 34.28secs in the downhill event.

Etherington said: “We’re really happy and I’m delighted with the silver medal.

“We knew going down it was a solid run.”

Powell added: “You haev to buil a friendship. In our case we had to built it within a short space of time but I just went with what she said and it’s worked.

“It’s come together now and we’re so happy.”

The pair had only teamed up last year and won two gold medals in the World Cup series in France in January.

GB chef de mission Penny Briscoe said: “The mood in the capm was good but it has laid a foundation for a great few days ahead.

“To get one medal in the bag will really booost morale an settle any nerves that may have been lingering.”

Powell and Etherington are due to compete in the Super G on Monday, as well as the slalom and giant slalom events.
