Upminster teen tops scholarship class

Upminster’s Connor Mills leads the Formula Ford Scholarship Class after the latest round of racing at Thruxton.

The teenager had some issues with his car during qualifying, which put paid to hopes of a good starting spot, but he still managed to record a second place finish and two thirds.

He said: “It was a good weekend and we had some solid scholarship finishes in all three races.

“We were on the back foot to start the weekend because we had driveshaft problems in qualifying, which meant we only completed three laps, so I had no chance to qualify anywhere high up.

“We had some very good starts, though, usually making up at least two places by the end of the first few corners.”

The next round of the championship takes place at Oulton Park, Cheshire in early June, with Mills hoping to make some improvements to the car in the short break to enable him to maintain his lead in the standings.

He holds a 10-point advantage over Ricky Collard at present and added: “We lacked a bit of pace at Thruxton, but I am going to be working very hard with the team in order to find that little extra that we are lacking.

“We also are still leading the Scholarship and I will be looking to extend that lead at Oulton Park.”

Hornchurch’s Bobby Thompson finished third in the scholarship ranks in the first race of the weekend, before adding two fourth places.

Remaining fixtures, Oulton Park, Cheshire (June 7-8); Croft, North Yorkshire (June 28-29); Snetterton, Norfolk (August 2-3); Knockhill, Fife (August 23-24); Rockingham, Northants (September 6-7); Silverstone, Northants (September 27-28); Brands Hatch, Kent (October 11-12).
