GB Paralympian receives President’s Award

Hornchurch youngster Amy Marren revealed her surprise after receiving the President’s Award at the Havering Sports Council;s annual prizegiving on Monday.

The 15-year-old Hall Mead pupil, a GB Paralympian and world disability swimming champion, became only the second person to be so acknowledged in the event’s 40-year history, following in the footsteps of former world boxing champion Colin Lynes.

But she said: “I was very surprised. My mum told me we had been invited along, but I thought it was just to be a guest on the night.”

Before handing out the award, Sports Council Preisdent Peter Bruce said: “This is for somebody in the borough who absolutely deserves an award but it’s not fair to put them in a category.

“But I can’t list all of their achievements as we’ve got to be out by midnight!”
