Oliver: We must stick to game-plan

London Raiders defenceman David Oliver says the team have been working hard to find the right formula to end their five-match losing run.

Alan Blyth’s men were beaten on home ice by Chelmsford in the cup last weekend, then went down the following night at Oxford in the league.

That double setback leaves them with only one win in their last eight outings ahead of their home clash with Invicta at Lee Valley tomorrow (Saturday) and trip to Solent the next night.

But Oliver claims they are determined to get back to winning ways, saying: “Wednesday night’s training was good. It was a high tempo session with a lot of man-on-man things, two-on-two down low, all things that we need to work on.

“The netminders got a lot of shots on them which is good. Ryan (Bainborough) maybe starting on Saturday, I’m not sure, and every defenceman was on the ice which was good.

“I feel the defensive pairings are starting to gel well now. We had our own little d-man time on Wednesday so we could go over a few things, which will help us out this weekend.”

Raiders have failed to beat Invicta in five previous league and cup meetings this season, although they came from two goals down to earn a 4-4 tie in October.

They are without Liam Chong due to a broken thumb, while Dynamos – who have suffered just one loss in their last 11 outings – could be at full strength.

Oliver added: “Invicta are on a nice run of games, picking up back-to-back wins, and we know what they are all about.

“But if we stick to our game-plan then we can come up with a home win.”

Raiders, who have slipped to seventh place in the National League table below MK Thunder, celebrated a 3-1 win on their last visit to Solent, but the Devils are currently just four points behind them and have four games in hand.

And games on the tiny Gosport rink are never easy, with Oliver adding: “Going to Solent on Sunday is going to be very different to Saturday with their small ice pad.

“It’s a cold rink too, but the last time we played them we walked away with both points.

“If we go with the same game-plan and our heads in the right place we can have a four-point weekend.”
