Youngsters from across the capital will be putting their best feet forward as the 2017 London Youth Games get underway this weekend.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Games, which have proved a stepping stone to Olympic glory for some of Great Britain’s best known sportsmen and women, including four-time champion Mo Farah.

Just under 2,000 youngsters from 32 boroughs will be battling it out at the cross-country competition at Parliament Hill today (Saturday), with races at under-11, under-13, under-15 and under-17 levels and medals will be presented to the top three finishers in each.

Trophies will also be given to the best overall borough teams, male and female, and last year’s event saw Havering finish in fifth place in the boys’ standings, with Redbridge close behind in sixth.

Havering were seventh in the girls’ standings and the borough will be represented by 68 students from 13 different schools, their biggest squad in five years.

New team organiser Michelle Gustavesen hopes they can maintain their improvement from recent years and said: “The London Youth Games is the focus of our sporting calender and I’m confident we will put in a good performance and show the talent that exists in Havering.”

*We will be closely following the progress of teams from our boroughs – Barking & Dagenham, Havering, Newham, Redbridge and Tower Hamlets – during the 2017 London Youth Games.

If you are involved as a team manager for any of our boroughs and would like to share your story, call 0208 477 3979 or email Group Sports Editor lee.power@archant.co.uk.
