Elite League: Lakeside Hammers 54 Leicester Lions 42

Lakeside picked up all three Elite League points on offer, but certainly made things a little more difficult then it needed to be last night.

The Hammers were 24-12 up at one stage, though decided to let the Lions back in over the middle heats before eventually coming away with the win which moved them to the top of the Elite League table.

Things looked promising at the start with a 5-1 win in the opening heat, with Richard Lawson gating, and Peter Karlsson passing Jason Doyle on the second bend of the opening lap.

Adam Ellis and Ben Morley almost followed suit, before Tom Perry found a way past the latter. That said it was 9-3 after two heats, and it got even better with the second maximum of the night in heat three with Davey Watt and Lewis Bridger sweeping past Mads Korneliussen on the opening lap.

The first shared heat of the night followed, with Mikkel Bech taking the chequered flag in heat four, though the Hammers looked to be on a 4-2 before Morley was passed by Perry once again.

Korneliussen swept round the outside of Karlsson and Bridger in heat five to become the first Leicester winner of the night for another shared heat.

Skipper Watt took the win in the following heat, though Patrick Hougaard managed to find a way past Bech as the Hammers moved 24-12 up.

Surprisingly, Simon Stead was chosen as a tactical ride in the next heat, and even he was unable to pass the in-form Lawson.

A 4-4 left the gap at 12, and again another bizarre tactical – choosing former Hammer Peter Ljung over Korneliussen – followed.

It reduced the arrears by two in the end with the up and down Bech at the back, while Watt kept up his unbeaten start to the night with the win.

Ellis’ exclusion from heat nine after lifting in the final bend of the opening lap looked like it may prove costly, only for reserve partner Ben Morley to come up trumps and hold of Max Clegg and Perry for a shared heat nine.

Lawson ran a disappointing last in heat 10, though ever reliable Karlsson to the victory. But with a bolt out of the blue in heat 11, the Lions were back in contest.

Bridger didn’t help partner Watt at all by taking his line and effectively ending his race, while he tried in vain himself to pass Stead.

He failed and the visitors had a first heat maximum of the night to pull it back to 38-32 with just four heats to go. Any fears of a repeat of last week’s meeting against Swindon were quickly alleviated when Ellis and Lawson combined to return the favour, and the gap was back to 10.

Patrick Hougaard was excluded in heat 13 after taking a tumble as Bridger and Karlsson packed in the minor places as they failed to prevent Doyle from taking the win.

Bech and Ellis looked on course for a penultimate heat maximum before the latter fell when leading, and he looked uncomfortable when receiving treatment, while the former was awarded the win.

The three points were still not secured though, but the experienced duo of Watt and Karlsson kept Korneliussen at bay for a final shared heat, and the Hammers took the home win.

Lakeside Hammers 52: Peter Karlsson 11+1 (from 5 rides), Richard Lawson 9 (4), Davey Watt 10+1 (5), Mikkel Bech 7 (4), Lewis Bridger 5+3 (4), Ben Morley 4 (3), Adam Ellis 6+1 (5).

Leicester Lions 42: Jason Doyle 10 (5), Peter Ljung 6 (4), Mads Korneliussen 6+2 (5), Simon Stead 8+1 (4), Patrick Hougaard 4 (4), Max Clegg 3+1 (4), Tom Perry 5+2 (4)
