It has been another busy week of sport across our corner of East London and Essex and, in a new feature, we will look at some of our favourite stories from our editions over the past seven days in The Saturday Six.

A typical week can see our team reporting on anything from athletics, basketball, cricket, darts, football, hockey, ice hockey, karate, rugby, swimming, tennis and volleyball, from West Ham in the Premier League down to under-eights mini rugby in a local park.

But we always like to hear about any kind of sporting stories, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with your news.

Now, in no particular order of preference, but more a case of chronology, here are my picks of the week:

Martin Bowers and Ovill McKenzie Martin Bowers and Ovill McKenzie

1.The Barking & Dagenham Post included a special feature about a schools tag rugby event which took place at the May & Baker club, who received praise for their support and assistance on the day.

2.The Newham Recorder sports pages housed a picture story about a special visit to Canning Town’s St Bonaventure’s School by former Leyton Orient player and manager Martin Ling, who talked to pupils during his stroll down Memory Lane.

3.The Docklands & East London Advertiser included a full page of boxing news, led by the sad story of Ovill McKenzie’s retirement on medical grounds.

4.The Ilford Recorder brought news of a Chance to Shine coach of the year award for Saba Nasim, who has helped Wanstead’s girls and women to plenty of success and launched a new Redbridge team.

5.Our recently-launched Wanstead & Woodford Recorder reported on the hockey win of Old Loughtonians women against rivals Wapping at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre.

6.And finally, the Romford Recorder included the honest thoughts of Old Cooperians player-coach Pat Reed about his rugby team’s progress this season, following derby success over Romford & Gidea Park.

As teams prepare to take to their respective fields once again this weekend, we wonder what stories might make The Saturday Six in seven days time!
