Romford Raiders face another big weekend of ice hockey action as they continue their chase for silverware.

They saw their hopes of adding the Essex Cup to the South East Trophy shattered by Chelmsford on Thursday night at Rom Valley Way, but have another chance for silverware.

They will be without young defenceman Billy Phillips, however, due to suspension after he was given a match penalty in the 1-0 win over the Chieftains, which was not enough to avert a 5-3 aggregate defeat.

Saturday

Raiders Challenge, 2nd leg

Isle of Wight v Romford (6.15pm)

It’s all to play for on the small rink at Ryde after the first leg at Rom Valley Way ended in a 4-4 draw.

And Romford have a point to prove after losing 5-2 to their namesakes in a league meeting just last weekend.

AJ Smith gave Danny Marshall’s men an early lead, but the home side hit back with four unanswered goals, including two on the powerplay, to take control.

Tyrone Miller’s deflected effort gave Romford hope, but it proved a false dawn as Wight added a late empty-net fifth.

It was a first win against Romford in six attempts for Jeremy Cornish’s side this season and with a piece of silverware on the line — which they won 6-3 on aggregate last term — they will be keen to chalk up another success heading into their final league meeting next month.

Sunday

ENL Division 1

Romford Raiders v Invicta (5.15pm)

Raiders celebrated an Invicta win last weekend, as the Dynamos defeated title rivals Chelmsford at Gillingham.

Romford had seen their lead at the top of the table cut to two points after their defeat at the Isle of Wight, but the Chieftains missed the chance to take over at the top as they went down by the odd goal in five in Kent.

That should serve as a warning to Raiders, though, as they look to win their last seven league matches of the season to clinch the title.

They have won four of the previous five meetings between the sides this season, by a combined 31-13 margin.

But they lost the other clash 4-1 and Dynamos are a much-improved side since that mid-November meeting.

Saturday

ENL Division 2

Romford Fury v Peterborough (5.15pm)

Fury welcome the Islanders for a quick return fixture, having skated to a 4-3 success in Peterborough two weeks ago.

Matt Brown hit a hat-trick in last weekend’s 5-2 home win over Basingstoke, Fury’s seventh victory in their last nine games.

And they go into this Rom Valley Way clash with confidence. Assistant coach Dan Sampson said: “We’ve had two big wins out of five big games and I’m looking for the momentum to continue.

“Peterborough will want revenge and we will need to be switched on from the start and bring our A game.”
