Havering Hockey Club managed to beat the big freeze on Saturday to play two fixtures.

But the relegation-threatened men’s first team were edged out 2-1 by basement boys Norwich City at Campion.

And the women’s 3rd XI went down 4-1 at Thurrock 2nds in their Essex Division One clash.

All other matches involving Havering, Romford and Upminster teams fell victim to frozen pitches, while Hornchurch and Romford had their Ryman League assignments with Hastings and Maldon postponed.

Campion, Old Cooperians, Romford & Gidea Park and Upminster all had rugby fixtures cancelled as temperates dropped.

And, although Romford Raiders and Romford Fury managed to play their English National League fixtures at Bristol and Peterborough, they endured horrendous journeys back to Rom Valley Way as heavy snow began to sweep in on Saturday evening.

Raiders were forced to cancel their home match against Slough last night, which will now take place on Sunday March 11, while Upminster’s Havering Indoor Cricket League meeting with Woodford Warriors at St Edwards School also fell victim to the weather.

Havering Mayesbrook’s athletes were in cross-country and indoor action, however, on Saturday.

Hoseah Gikungu finished second in the South East Schools Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Basildon, helping Essex win team gold.

Lydia Hallam had a top-10 finish as the intermediate girls also won gold, while a host of youngsters set new personal bests at the London Indoor Games at Lee Valley.

Alex Law, Robbie Clarricoats, Thomas Pitkin, Ed Thompson, Alex Hewitt, Tomi and Tolu Akingbade all improved on previous bests in their respective events.

Ashleigh Lewis won the all-rounder title at the East Region Sportshall final in Norwich, meanwhile, to reach the national finals.
