Fourth medal makes Paralympic pair Britain’s best ever

Caroline Powell insists her and skier Jade Etherington have saved their best for when it matters most after creating history by becoming the first British athletes to win four medals at a single Winter Paralympics.

Former Coopers Coborn pupil Powell, 19, guided visually impaired Etherington to silver in the women’s super combined event today, taking their tally in Sochi to four medals.

With only three athletes left to compete the Super-G portion of the visually impaired super combined event the GB duo just needed to finish to guarantee a podium place.

But with 3.12seconds to make up on Russia’s Aleksandra Frantceva the pair went out hard in search of a first gold medal at the Games.

Their Super-G time of 1min 26.58secs was the fastest by some margin but a combined time of 2:28.38 was still just 0.63seconds short of Frantceva.

But Powell, who only began skiing with Etherington last year, believes they can be happy considering they still exceeded expectations.

“Before we went down I said this is the last time we will ever ski speed together (in Sochi) and it is one of our favourite disciplines on the track,” said Powell.

“We skied hard and it was the best skiing we have done in a long time. Jade has definitely reached her peak. Together we have formed a great bond and there is great communication between us.

“It has worked so well throughout the season and we have peaked at the right time.

“We have managed to get four medals and we are so happy with that. We are obviously devastated not to get the gold, but we can’t do anything about it.”

Powell and Etherington will see their Sochi 2014 experience come to an end with the giant slalom on Sunday, their least favourite event.

But Powell believes if they find the right balance in their skiing then they may be able to finish with another medal.

“It is the one that is in between,” she added. “We train it as hard as we do the other disciplines, but we love speed and we love slalom so much.

“It’s well known that it’s not our favourite event, but we will give it our best and we will see what happens.”
