Divers collect medals at Southampton event

Havering Cormorant youngsters came away from the Gavin Brown ‘Love to Dive’ competition in Southampton with a bag of medals at the weekend.

The annual event is held in memory of promising young diver Brown, who was tragiclaly killed in a road accident and Havering’s squad, aged seven to 12, competed against clubs from Southampton, Wessex, West Wilts, Waltham Forest, Reading, Guildford and Haringey.

And Havering collected six medals in total, starting with bronze for Ruby Thorne as Nicole Dobbins finished seventh, Hannah Newbrook ninth and Maisie Jones 11th.

Katie Thorne produced some fine saves in the next event on her way to silver, before Oliver Goodspeed claimed gold for the boys, ahead of clubmates Max Spencer (ninth), Rio Pollard (11th) and Aaron Oddie (20th).

Elsie Ellis added another gold in the 12/13-year-old girls group, before Harry Smalley also won gold ahead of silver medalist Adam Dobbins.

Coaches Alex Bagiu and Jodie Ellis were delighted with the efforts of all the divers, who were up against around 100 others, and got to meet GB Olympic diver Peter Waterfield, who signed autographs and posed for photos.
