Elite League 2014 fixtures released

Lakeside Hammers will begin their 2014 Elite League home campaign with a first-ever visit from the Leicester Lions.

The club are set to hold their press and practice day on March 25, before riding in a challenge match at Poole the following night.

They will hold their first home meeting of the new season on March 28, against opposition still to be confirmed, before beginning their Elite League schedule away at Birmingham on April 2.

The Lions will then ride into town on Friday April 4.

Highlights of the fixture list, released today, include the traditional Good Friday meeting with rivals Eastbourne (1pm) and the inclusion of Saturday night meetings against Coventry, who are led by GP star Chris Harris, and Darcy Ward’s Poole.

World champion Tai Woffinden and his Wolverhampton teammates are also due to come to Purfleet for Saturday night action on July 5, although that meeting may be brought forward 24 hours to avoid any potential clash with England’s football team, if they make progress at the World Cup in Brazil.

Hammers co-promoter Jon Cook said: “It’s great to offer up a full fixture list and I am particularly pleased that through the support of the Raceway we have managed to overcome the traffic problems that deter fans from visiting us on Bank Holiday Fridays by switching to Saturdays.

“These meetings really are the jewel in our crown, along with a packed summer holiday of meetings that sees a gap of no more than a fortnight between home meetings. The team can’t wait to get cracking.”

There was more good news for the club this week as it was announced they had agreed a deal with Premier League side Workington to sign Richard Lawson on a permanent deal.

Cook added: “Richard is a crucial part of our team for 2014 and this move shows our commitment to working with him to become an established Elite League rider in the years ahead.”
