Raiders slipped to a fourth successive defeat as their namesakes skated off with the challenge cup points at Lee Valley last night.

The hosts, beaten home and away by Chelmsford in their first cup outings of the season last weekend, welcomed Dwayne Newman back to their blue line but were without Jacob Ranson, who had left in midweek to join MK Thunder, as well as Nathan Pollard, Tyrone Miller and no.1 goalie Euan King, who was ruled out through illness.

That meant a first start of the season for Frankie Sabine, but the back-up endured a baptism of fire, conceding inside 90 seconds to Daniel Pye and again before four minutes had been played as Loris Taylor struck.

Matthew Vizzari put Wight 3-0 up after 11 minutes but Jakub Klima replied before the break for the home side, who were outshot 18-13 in the opening session.

Klima struck again just before the midway point, after David Oliver and Frankie Harvey had combined, but Wight restored their two-goal cushion just nine seconds later through player-coach Jeremy Cornish and further goals from Taylor and Vizzari put them four clear at the 40-minute mark.

The visitors went 7-2 up early in the final period as Richard Nembhard got his name on the scoresheet, before Raiders grabbed their third through Grant Taylor just 29 seconds later.

Their joy was shortlived as Wight’s Richard Facey made it 8-3 in the 46th minute, but man of the match Klima completed his hat-trick from another Oliver assist and AJ Smith provided further consolation with a fifth home goal, assisted by Shaun Yardley and Dan Peters.

The two sides meet again next Saturday on the island’s under-sized rink at Ryde, when National League points will be up for grabs.

And Raiders player-coach Danny Marshall will no doubt hope King is able to return between the pipes as his side bid to maintain their hold on a top-four spot.

Scorers, Raiders: Klima 3 Taylor 1 Smith 1 Oliver 0+2 Harvey 0+2 B Phillips 0+2 McGrath 0+1 Yardley 0+1 Peters 0+1.

Wight: Taylor 2+2 Vizzari 2 Pye 1+1 Facey 1+1 Cornish 1 Nembhard 1 Larter 0+2 Hobbis 0+1 Tribe 0+1 Osman 0+1.

Shots on goal: Sabine (Raiders) 44 Weller (Wight) 33.

Penalty minutes: Raiders 8 Wight 8.
