‘Chicharito’ picked up hamstring injury while on international duty with Mexico

West Ham United will be without top scorer Javier Hernandez for Sunday’s trip to Watford in the Premier League after the Mexican was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

The 29-year-old, known as ‘Chicharito’, picked up the injury while on international duty.

At the time of writing, there has been no set date for his return, but it is unlikely the former Manchester United and Real Madrid frontman will be fit to face the Hornets.

Doubts also remain over the fitness of Michail Antonio and James Collins, while both Sam Byram and Jose Fonte will definitely miss out.

West Ham will also be sweating over the fitness of Winston Reid, with the defender set to play for New Zealand in the second leg of their World Cup play-off in Peru in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Regardless of who is fit and who is not, new manager David Moyes will hope the visit to Vicarage Road brings about his first win as Hammers boss.

Since taking charge last week, the Scot has been busy adding to his backroom staff, bringing in long-time ally Alan Irvine as assistant manager.

The 54-year-old has also added former West Ham defender Stuart Pearce as another assistant manager.

Pearce, a left back in his playing days, spent two years with the east Londoners from 1999 to 2001 and earned something of a cult hero status.

But now the 55-year-old is part of the coaching staff, he hopes he can help the club move out of the relegation zone in the league.

“David is acutely aware – as we all are – of exactly where the club are at this moment in time,” Pearce told the club website.

“It’s not going to be easy, no one is expecting it to be, because the stakes are very high in the Premier League, but I think with the staff here and the squad of players, we have a great chance.

“The main thing is to enhance the togetherness at the club. I’ve watched West Ham a lot from the outside, because it’s one of my former clubs, I probably keep a closer eye on things.

“I’ve seen a lot of them this season – I covered the Tottenham game at Wembley and the Liverpool game last week, and it is clear that everyone needs galvanising.”

A win at Watford would certainly galvanise West Ham.
