West Ham keeper Adrian must have been wondering what he had let himself in for.

With Joe Hart ineligible, the Spanish stopper had to step between the posts for a game against a Manchester City side who have been scoring like it is going out of fashion.

Added to that, his central defence included an 18-year-old in Declan Rice and a left-back in Aaron Cresswell.

But Adrian is made of strong stuff and he put in a man of the match performance that deserved much more than an unlucky 2-1 defeat.

“I don’t feel any happiness because we got nothing from the game,” said the Spaniard.

“Obviously, from a personal point of view I try to give my best every time I play.”

The modest 30-year-old has been the perfect professional as he has watched Joe Hart conceding goals all season.

The three Carabao Cup games he has played have resulted in three wins and two clean sheets, but still Hart has kept his place in the team.

“The feeling is that we’ve worked hard, we’ve defended well for all of the game and we had a great chance to make it 2-2 at the end,” reflected Adrian.

He made excellent saves from Leroy Sane, from Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne, but in the end he could not stop Silva grabbing the late winner from close range.

“We have to take the positive things from this game, that we did a great job in defence, and build for the next games,” he insisted.

“We have a long run to the end of the season, we are in a difficult situation, but I think we have a great dressing room and a great squad.”

The West Ham keeper has now played 127 games in claret and blue and he has certainly never let the team down.

So the big question is, will he keep his place for the clash with Chelsea on Saturday, or will we see Hart return between the posts?

“The manager knows that I train hard every day, so I try to give him a headache for the next few games to fight for the number one position,” he said.

Rumour has it that if Hart is fit then it is part of his loan deal that he starts, but surely that couldn’t possibly be true?

Adrian deserves to keep his place in the team after that performance. If he doesn’t then something is not right.

All will be revealed on Saturday.
