West Ham's Pedro Obiang after the defeat at Watford

A week of intense training under David Moyes gave the Hammers no return at Vicarage Road

West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang was making his way to the coach with his head down and his spectacles on when he was intercepted by this reporter.

And it is to the Spaniard’s credit that he turned and agreed to speak about another disappointing defeat for the Hammers at Watford.

“It is difficult to say what went wrong really,” admitted the defensive midfielder, still only 25.

“Maybe we missed chances when we had them, maybe we weren’t ready or fit enough probably.

“And maybe we were a little too aggressive at times and we also made some mistakes.”

That pretty much sums it up. David Moyes has wanted a more solid looking team with Obiang, Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate forming a three man midfield barrier, but Watford simply hit them down the flanks.

“Training under the new boss has been totally different,” he revealed. “We have started to do different work and we have a totally different philosophy and mentality.

“But these things need time and the manager has to have time to get his ideas over to us and explain what he wants us to do.

“I know it is difficult for him, he hasn’t had a lot of time, but we have to do it.”

What West Ham had to do on Sunday was take their chances, something which left Obiang exasperated.

“You know in football when you get those sorts of chances, you have to score and it changes the game,” said the former Sampdoria man.

“It happened when we played against Tottenham. We scored and it changed things and we kept going.

“But against Watford it didn’t happen and we have to continue to work hard, that is the only thing I can say to the fans.”

West Ham will look to turn it around against Leicester City at the London Stadium on Friday night, but Obiang is looking beyond that big match.

“Leicester is not the only big game we have,” he insisted. “The next nine games are big matches and everyone of them is just as important because we are in a bad situation and we can’t continue like this.”

As Obiang says, it may take time for Moyes to get his ideas over, but in the meantime they still need points, starting with the Leicester City game on Friday.
