With no West Ham game over the weekend it gave me a chance to have a short break and also the chance to give you my views on the big
talking points in football at the moment.

One of them is of course the fate of our former boss in Sam Allardyce who lost his ‘dream job’ after a sting by the Daily Telegraph.

I actually feel sorry for Big Sam, he waited a long time for the England job and I don’t like to see someone taken down by outside
influences. But as England manager you have got to be above suspicion and not put yourself in a vulnerable position.

He must be raging inside and will look back when he’s cooled down and think ‘what was I doing?’. But it was the right decision.

As to the revelations coming out about football, I have to say I’m not surprised at all. The FA, while handling Big Sam’s situation correctly, need to take a long, hard look at themselves and sort out this sorry mess, because they are in charge.

I’ve been saying for many years that the three things in football that needed sorting out are FIFA, UEFA and the FA!

Well, two of those are being sorted and the FA needs to be the next in line.

West Ham are back in action on Saturday with a trip to Crystal Palace and it will be a really tough game for us to get a result.

They are likely to have James Tomkins playing for them and I have to say that we needed to do more to try and keep him at the club.

I know James wanted to play regularly, but just as important as signing players is keeping those you have got and that wasn’t done well enough with him.

As to the game, we should have one or two players back which will certainly help, while Palace seem to be better away from home, so I think we may get a 1-1 draw.

There has been a lot of criticism of striker Simone Zaza and the fact that if he plays a certain number of games, we will be forced to sign him permanently.

Unfortuntely, I haven’t seen anything from him to suggest he is worth another £20million, so I can’t see him playing too many more games for us.

There were other players out there who would have done a much better job for the combined amount for us, with Christian Benteke, now at Palace, being just one of them!

As good as recruitment was last season, it has been nowhere near it this year and that has put pressure on the squad.
