West Ham fans invaded the Liberty Shopping Centre in Romford on Wednesday as the Hammers launched their new home kit in style.

Former players Steve Lomas and Kenny Brown came down to meet the crowds and there was a chance to take on the club’s official eSports Fifa 17 man Jamboo as well as do the Sky Sports Walk-down in front of the special green screen.

There was plenty taking advantage of the opportunity both adults and youngsters and ex Hammers captain Steve Lomas was delighted to see so many kids in Romford in West Ham colours.

“I think it is great to see,” said the former Northern Ireland international. “They are the lifeblood of this club and when you think about the new stadium and kids getting in for £99 for a whole season, it is brilliant.

“There has been a lot of negativity about the ground, but that is certainly a massive positive. If you are a dad with kids, you can get those tickets and be watching a Premier League team for that sort of money so hats off to West Ham for that.”

Lomas was at the club between 1997 and 2005 and appreciates how important the kids are to the club.

“We used to have open days under Harry (Redknapp) when the kids would come down to the training ground,” reflected the midfield man. “It has always been a family club and things like here in Romford are great.

“The kids can come down and get their new top and do the interactive thing. This is what kids like these days and it is surprising how very few of them are nervous, they just get up and do it.

“In our day we had the Panini sticker book and that was about it,” he continued. “I had one of myself too when it came out. Years of collecting them and then you are in it which was nice.

“I think I was a bog standard card, I probably got swapped a few times, but I didn’t mind that, it was just great to be in there. Now it is a very different world for kids.”
