In the good old days, when goalkeepers wore flat caps and didn’t worry about wearing gloves, they did things slightly differently.

For a shot like Jose Izquierdo’s for Brighton on Saturday, the keeper would have reached for it with his left hand.

Nowadays, it is common practice to try and reach it with the right hand, but whether Adrian could have got a touch with either hand is a moot point.

The Spanish goalkeeper looked frustrated after his side’s 3-1 loss against Brighton, it was no surprise as it was the first time he has tasted defeat in 2018.

“Obviously we are very disappointed with the result, because losing 3-1 is not good enough,” said Adrian.

“We didn’t play very well, but to be fair, until their second goal it was really a 50-50 game with both teams fighting.

“But it was a magnificent goal from Izquierdo, there was nothing I could have done with that,” reflected the 31-year-old on the Columbian’s wonder-strike.

“After that we concedewd a third goal and it was not that good from then on and we could have let in one or two more.”

It had been a different story in the first half as after a tricky start which saw Brighton take the lead, West Ham began to take control.

“In the first half we created some good,” he said. “Apart from the goal, we had two headers from Sam Byram, another chance for ‘Chicharito’ and one for Joao Mario.

“But in the Premier League you do not get many chances and when you do, you have to take them.

“This is football and in the second half they played better us.”

It was the end of a decent league run for the Hammers, who had gone six unbeaten since the home loss by Newcastle United in December.

“We have been doing a good job in training and the defence is working really hard, not just the defence, everyone,” he insisted.

“This was not a good day though and so not a good example.”

So what about Adrian himself? The Spaniard took the number one jersey from Joe Hart, although manager David Moyes has always insisted that the Manchester City loanee will get more chances.

“I am trying to help my team-mates,” said Adrian, who made one superb save from Pascal Gross on Saturday.

“I try to give my best and I am not happy because we conceded three goals, but we have to keep fighting and get ready for the next game against Watford, because it will be massive.”

It certainly is, but will we see the Spaniard or England goalkeeper Hart between the sticks?

Surely it would be harsh to change the keeper on the evidence of this game.

We shall see.
