It has been a badly kept secret for a couple of weeks now, but today West Ham United finally confirmed that manager David Moyes had left the club with immediate effect.

A statement confirmed the Scot’s desparture, despite him fulfilling his remit of keeping the Hammers in the Premier League this season.

The former Everton man came in back in November after the sacking of Slaven Bilic, when the Hammers sat in the bottom three of the league.

And though he certainly had ups and downs during his time, including some heavy defeats, he did enough to haul them up the league.

He got the team training harder and working harder on the pitch, and perhaps his biggest legacy will be the way he turned Austrian attacker Marko Arnautovic from a petulant, lazy player, into a top class striker and the Hammer of the Year.

Co-chairman David Sullivsn confirmed the news on the club website saying.

“I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to David Moyes and his staff for achieving the target of keeping West Ham United in the Premier League.

“Throughout his time here, David has carried himself with dignity and honesty and we have all found him to be a pleasure to work with. He, Alan (Irvine), Stuart (Perace) and Billy (McKinlay) accepted the challenge and attacked it head on, turning around a difficult situation. They deserve great respect for the job they have done and they leave the Club with our best wishes.

“When David and his team arrived, it was the wish of both parties that the focus be only on the six months until the end of the season, at which point a decision would be made with regards to the future. Having taken stock of the situation and reflected now the campaign is complete, we feel that it is right to move in a different direction.

“We are already taking steps to identify and recruit the manager we believe can take West Ham United forward in line with our ambitions. We aim to appoint a high-calibre figure who we feel will lead the Club into an exciting future for our loyal supporters within the next ten days.”

The wishes of the fans seems to have been a major consideration in this decision. They have been stung by the criticism they have received, as well as the protests during the Burnley home match back in March.

Many polls in social media about whether to keep Moyes have come down on the negative side and it seems the board have taken that into account.

And so the search for a new boss has begun with Paulo Fonsecu, Rafa Benitez and Manuel Pellegrini the apparent front runners.
