Mixed fortunes for East London clubs

It was not the start to the new Premier League season that West Ham United supporters had hoped for, as they saw their men hammered 4-0 by Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.

Romelu Lukaku maintained his impressive record against the Irons, scoring twice at Old Trafford following his big-money move from Everton, and there were late goals for Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.

And Hammers boss Slaven Bilic offered no excuses, admitting his players were second best on Sunday.

But they will be hoping for much better this weekend when they head to Southampton, who drew 0-0 with Swansea in their opening fixture.

Leyton Orient are also looking to bounce back from a shellacking in the National League after they were hit for six by Bromley in midweek.

The 2-0 home win over Maidstone on Saturday was soon forgotten as they went down 6-1 in south London and Steve Davis takes his squad to Woking seeking a response.

Dagenham & Redbridge remain unbeaten, though, as they make the long trip to AFC Fylde, but will be concerned at the number of goals they are conceding.

Having started the campaign with back-to-back 2-1 wins over Barrow and Boreham Wood, John Still’s men had to settle for points at Eastleigh (2-2) and at home to Ebbsfleet, where they let a two-goal lead slip in a 3-3 draw.

Archant London’s Dave Evans, George Sessions and Jacob Ranson discuss the start of the new season with Matt Withers in our latest podcast of 2017/18.
