The new domestic football season gets underway this weekend with Leyton Orient beginning life in the National League in a lunchtime kick-off at Sutton United.

And given all the upheaval at the Brisbane Road club in recent months, supporters will no doubt be relieved just to see their team out on the field, even if they are playing outside the Football League for the first time in their long history.

East London rivals Dagenham & Redbridge went close to gaining promotion last season, losing in the play-off semi-finals to Forest Green, who went on to win the final at Wembley Stadium, and start their campaign at home against Barrow.

But Premier League West Ham United have to wait another week to start their 2017-18 season, with the first of three successive away matches at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

The London Stadium will not be ready to host football, following the World Athletics Championships, until early September and the Hammers must also visit Southampton and Newcastle before hostinng top flight new boys Huddersfield.

Manager Slaven Bilic has made four big signings this summer already as he looks to improve on last season’s 11th-place finish.

Archant London’s Dave Evans, Ned Keating and Jacob Ranson discuss the start of the new season with Matt Withers in our first podcast of 2017/18.
