West Ham winger Stewart Downing believes that striker Andy Carroll could be the perfect man to come off the bench for England in this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

The big striker’s chances of making the plane this summer seemed to be all but gone, but a superb display in the 2-0 win over Spurs had the West Ham fans purring and Downing full of praise for the Geordie marksman.

“If he plays like that, he should go with England,” said Downing. “He is the one striker in the country who plays the way he does.”

Carroll has scored just two goals in an injury-ruined season, but he is fit and raring to go at the moment, and the man who was with him at Liverpool, thinks he could be vital for England’s chances.

“I think he is a different option for Roy Hodgson,” he said. “If you look at all the strikers for England he is just completely different. He can affect things, make it difficult for defenders.

“I am not saying put him in from the start, but if he comes on he gives you different options, so I would take him personally.

“If you ask the Tottenham defenders, Dawson and Chiriches, they will say he is a huge handful.”

Many were tipping Downing to make an impact on the England squad for the World Cup following his £6million move from Liverpool to West Ham last summer, but a disappointing campaign has seen his chance all but gone, despite the injuries to Theo Walcott, Jay Rodrigues and now Andros Townsend.

“At the start of the season, there was a chance for me to play, but realistically, I don’t think I was ever there with Roy Hodgson, I haven’t played since the Euros,” he reflected.

“All I can do is play the best I can and if he doesn’t pick me he doesn’t pick me. Sometimes you are just not the player he wants, but you never know, you have to keep going and with more injuries and suspensions, anything can happen.”
