Hammers striker Andy Carroll will miss the next three vital Premier League games after FA upheld his red card

West Ham’s hopes of Premier League survival have been dealt a savage blow after the appeal to overturn Andy Carroll’s red card against Swansea City was thrown out by the Football Association.

Carroll was dismissed just before the hour in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Swansea City at Upton Park after clashing with defender Chico Flores.

The England international seemed to make contact with the Swansea man with a flailing arm and Flores went to ground clutching his face, Howard Webb producing a red card for the former Liverpool man.

But on looking at the replays of the event, it seems that Carroll only touched Flores’ ponytail and the Swansea man had writhed on the ground presumably in order to get Carroll sent off.

West Ham were hopeful that they could get the red card rescinded when the case was brought up at FA headquarters today (Tuesday) but the four-man panel decided to back Webb’s original decision and the three-match ban stays in place.

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan expressed his disappointment at the decision.

He tweeted: “I am very upset with @FA decision not to remove AC’s red card. These are vital few games for us, let’s stick together and fight through it”.

The decision means that Carroll will now miss the vital February matches at Aston Villa on Saturday and at home to Norwich City and Southampton in the next three weeks.

The Hammers will now have to rely on the striking powers of Carlton Cole and new signing Marco Borriello as they play three vital games this month in their quest to haul themselves out of the bottom three.
