Hammers centre half Winston Reid thinks it is lack of goals that is costing them dear at the moment

Hammers defender Winston Reid insists that the team have not mentioned the R word in the dressing room, despite slipping to their fourth defeat on the trot at West Brom on Saturday.

When West Ham were sitting 10th in the table, there was perhaps no need to panic, but now 15th , many nervous fans are looking over their shoulders.

“Look, basically there are still enough points that teams can collect to go past us, so we are not safe,” said the centre back, who would have been personally disappointed with the Baggies’ goal.

“We haven’t really been talking about relegation to be honest, we have just be concentrating on trying to get more points and pushing ourselves up the table, but we have lost four games in a row and it has not come at a good time.”

West Brom’s 1-0 win on Saturday was their first under Pepe Mel and Reid was quick to pinpoint the reason why.

“We just can’t really score goals at the moment and we are conceding so it is not really the best,” he said. “Ben Foster played well, but we have to start putting away our chances.

“That is two games where we haven’t scored now, while we also should have done better with their goal, so all in all we are not really hitting our best form.

“At least we are creating our chances, but we are not finishing them off.”

Reid and his defensive team-mates had plenty of trouble with the pace of goalscorer Saido Berahino in particular, so what was the gameplan?

“There wasn’t really a gameplan, because we didn’t know who was going to be playing for them,” admitted the New Zealand international captain.

“You just have to deal with it whoever it is. I don’t think we are nervous. I just think that the balls are not really falling for us at the moment.

“We have been punished in the last two games when maybe earlier on in the year we would have got two draws.”

“It is the end of the season now and we want to finish off well. We have two exciting games coming up and we have to try and finish the season off as best as we can.”
