Cottee Column: It’s always nice to get a break

Hammers legend TC writes for you each week

Following on from some great results the team went off to Dubai and speaking from my experiences it was always nice to get a break.

These days it’s Dubai they go to but I don’t think it existed when I was around! It was more Spain and Tenerife but the principle is still the same.

It’s always nice to have a bit of time to relax and it was certainly deserved after the four results the team picked up before they went away.

Most people know footballers get paid a lot of money these days, but mentally it is a long season and it can do you the world of good for the change of environment, get some better weather and have a little time to just relax, with perhaps Sam and Macca not shouting and hollering at you like most days of the week!

It’s also always good for new players to get time to settle in with the likes of Marco Borriello, Antonio Nocerino and Pablo Armero coming in and getting used to the great team spirit there is at the club, something which I have witnessed when visiting the training ground a couple of times this season.

They went off to Dubai on the back of four fantastic results but you can very quickly put yourself back in a bad situation and with Everton, a place we’ve never done well at following on from this weekend’s game against Southampton it is very easy to undo all the good work.

All in all, it’s just something different and hopefully they’ve come back refreshed for an important fixture on Saturday.

It was a poor decision in my opinion from their manager Mauricio Pochettino to rest players for their FA Cup game against Sunderland, although he has done very well at Southampton.

I don’t quite get the reason why he decided to rest the players. They are in a wonderful position in the league where they aren’t going to get relegated and they are looking to push on and maybe get in the Europa League.

If they had put their best side out and won they would have been playing Brighton or Hull and a great chance to get to Wembley for the fans.

But Pochettino’s argument will be that he wants to get the win over West Ham this weekend.

It’s a difficult game against Southampton but given the recent results we’ve had we should be full of confidence and I’ll go for an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Morrison move could be good thing

Ravel Morrison has shown in glimpses what a good player he is during his time with the club and now he has joined QPR on loan today.

We must remember this is only a loan deal, not a permanent one. Hopefully it’s not the end of the line for him at the club because he has a lot of potential and I hope he’s only going there because he isn’t getting games at West Ham.

There’s not much use if he’s not playing and I hope the move is an ambition from him to get some game time at a decent team like QPR under a good manager. I just hope he doesn’t go there and do the same thing.
