Packed with stunning images, with recollections from key men at each of the 20 finals, as well as statistics, unique official documents and memorabilia from the FIFA World Football Museum, the book tells the behind the scenes stories, as well as analysing the most famous and infamous incidents.

It also features the biggest stars and many previously unknown ones too, all with a unique point of view.

FIFA’s plans for a world championship outside the Olympic Games came to fruition in 1930 and Uruguay was chosen as the host nation, with only four European nations making the journey by ship to South America.

The book takes us through to 2014 with host nation Brazil suffering the shock of a 7-1 semi-final defeat by Germany and Mario Götze becoming the first substitute to score a winner in a final.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “By the time the 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Russia, we will just have celebrated the 90th anniversary of what appeared to be a rather ordinary day for football: 28 May 1928.

“That was when the 29 member associations that composed FIFA at the time gathered in Amsterdam for the 18th FIFA Congress and decided that it would be a good idea to organise the maiden edition of the FIFA World Cup two years later.

“Little did they know they were discreetly sowing the seeds of what would evolve into the greatest show on Earth. We are custodians of the FIFA World Cup’s aura and it is our duty to preserve the memories of each step that resulted in football’s masterpiece as we know it. This is what this book is about.”

The FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich is the home of the FIFA World Cup trophy, where it is on permanent display.

The exhibition space is roughly the size of a football pitch and offers a journey through time, as well as the permanent collection, a library and research centre with over 7,000 books.
