Stalwart ‘gutted’ with missed penalty

Romford’s Paul Clayton has revealed he would have settled for a share of the spoils with Ryman One North high-flyers Witham before their Spa Road meeting on Saturday.

But the long-serving stalwart and club record appearance holder admitted he was disappointed to waste a great chance for victory.

Witham were reduced to 10 men in the opening minutes as Luke Olley was giving his marching orders for a challenge on George Woodward, who had to be replaced soon after.

Boro were awarded a penalty later in the half, but the usually reliable Clayton could not convert and the scoreline remained blank.

He said: “We would’ve been happy with a point before the game, but as the game went we should have taken all three points.

“It was a definite sending-off. Thankfully George seemed okay after the game.

“I was going to miss one sooner or later, but I’m just gutted it was in a game where it could have won all three points.”

Boro had beaten Aveley 2-0 in midweek, thanks to first-half goals from Nick Reynolds and Ryan Imbert and are set to visit Waltham Abbey tomorrow.

They welcome lowly Erith & Belvedere to Ship Lane on Thursday, completing a busy spell of four games in eight days, and Clayton added: “The mood’s good in the camp. We’re unbeaten in three and the whole squad is playing a part.”
