Martin buzzing after four wins in six days

Romford manager Paul Martin was buzzing after seeing his side defeat Ryman One North leaders VCD Athletic in midweek for their fourth win in six days.

Boro had beaten Waltham Abbey, Wroxham and Soham Town before hosting the table-toppers at Ship Lane, where they kept a fourth successive clean sheet to reach the 50-point mark this season.

Tom Richardson’s last-minute goal started the superb run, with Nick Reynolds netting a brace and Paul Clayton also on target on Saturday, before Reynolds and Dan Jones struck on Monday.

Captain Jack Barry and Eddie Hart were on the mark against VCD and Martin and his players now want to beat last season’s haul of 64 points

He said: “We stayed in the (Soham) bar for a couple of hours celebrating St Paddy’s Day and the boys were talking on the coach saying I think we have got a chance (of beating last season’s total).

“If the players start saying that, that is a confidence booster from the players, not me talking. I just point them in the right direction and if they are talking about having that belief to go and beat that 64 points then lets try and do it.”

Romford go to Sudbury tomorrow (Saturday) before welcoming Needham Market to Ship Lane on Wednesday and Martin will again make changes to his team.

The rotation system has worked wonders so far and as long as the players are happy, Martin is content to continue with that policy.

He added: “Sudbury are not on form at the moment, but it is another very quality side. If you are not on your game you know you are going to get beat.

“We are going to be heavy Saturday and I probably will make another five, six or seven changes because I’ve got to.

“It seems to me that the squad is happy with the rotation system. They know they are getting games, they know when they need a rest and they are growing up.”

The Romford manager revealed his delight at the two midweek wins against strong opposition that leaves Boro on the heels of Aveley and the top 10.

Martin said: “Soham were second on Monday night, but we came away from there with three points and a 2-0 win and we have down the same again versus the league leaders.

“I thought we got our tactics right first half against VCD. We got our goals and we deserved them.

“But my players’ discipline in the second half is a better credit than the first half performance because VCD didn’t have nothing and I thought we dominated from start to finish.

“What more can you ask for from a bunch of boys that don’t get paid?”
