Ryman North: Romford 1 Dereham Town 2
Romford saw their three-game unbeaten run brought to an end by the Magpies at Ship Lane.
Boro boss Paul Martin made just one change to his starting line-up following their 6-1 win at Redbridge, with Danny Cossington coming in for Ade Cole.
And they took the lead after only seven minutes as Jamie Dicks struck a contender for goal of the season for the second Saturday in succession.
The home side continued to impress in the opening half hour, with Cossington a key figure, but Dereham were back on terms on 34 minutes thanks to a speculative effort from Matthew Cook.
And shellshocked Boro then fell behind three minutes later as Ryan Crisp produced a good finish to beat Michael Gooch.
That was how it stayed, although Dereham hit the post twice in the second half and Gooch made two good saves, while Nick Reynolds had one header well saved and put another just wide late on.
Romford remain just five points above the relegation zone ahead of their midweek meeting with high-flying Harlow.
Romford: Gooch, Boswell, Barry (Akpele 70), Ishmail, Potter, Dicks, Woodward, Cossington (Sadiku 63), Reynolds, Taylor (Marfo 71), Anderson. Unused subs: Frew, Wray.
