Martin hails five ‘great’ signings

Romford manager Paul Martin said the return of five more players was “great for the club” this week.

Kurt Smith, Michael Sammut, Lewis Francis and Aime Blessing have all signed, while Ryan Imbert returns after a spell at Thurrock.

Boro will be looking to build on their eighth place finish in Ryman One North this season and Martin said: “You can’t argue with who you know. It’s great for the club to sign them again.”

Martin was delighted to secure Imbert’s return after his stint in the Ryman Premier Division adding: “He (Imbert) gives us a different outlet. Sometimes in matches you have to change formations and Ryan can fit into that.

“It’s great that he has come back to join us, but we would never stop anyone from playing in a higher league.

“Some lads go up to a higher level and if it doesn’t work out for them they always seem to come back to us.”

Romford hosted an open trial earlier this month were over 200 players turned up looking to join the club.

That number has since been whittled down to 10 and Martin added: “The trials have given us a good right-back, centre-back and central midfielder.

“I think we’re going to start this season with the strongest squad we’ve ever had.

“It’ll be tough during the season as I am going to have to keep players happy with rotations. I have no favourites so if a player is playing well, he’ll play.

“There are going to be players fighting for every shirt.”

Boro have started their pre-season training, with intra-club matches scheduled for tomorrow week (July 6), and Martin is impressed with their fitness.

He added: “Everyone made it through (the first training session) without being sick! A lot of the young guys are looking for six packs now and have been doing a lot of gym work.”

Romford play Billericay on July 13 and Martin is hoping his side use pre-season to get used to a passing game that can help “kill sides off”.

“A couple of times last year we were 2-0 up at half-time and threw away the game,” he said.

“We need to get more comfortable on the ball and string some passes together before the long ball.”
