Ryman Div 1N: Romford 3 Needham Market 2
Tom Richardson scored deep into injury time to seal a sixth consecutive Ryman One North victory for Romford as they played out a five-goal thriller with Needham Market last night.
Paul Clayton and Jack Barry both equalised for Boro in an entertaining first 45 minutes at Ship Lane before Richardson, who only started after Ryan Imbert sustained an injury in the warm-up, smashed in to spark jubilant celebrations.
The visitors started well with Dave Cowley curling an effort just wide before they took the lead after just seven minutes.
Boro keeper Aaron Omand punched Cowley’s cross clear, but the second time the ball was whipped in Samuel Nunn headed into the corner of the home net.
Abs Seymour nearly capitalised on away keeper Andrew Plummer’s mistake before Romford leveled on 21 minutes.
Seymour picked up the loose ball and showed great strength to shake off Cowley before playing across goal for Clayton to tap in from close range.
The hosts were in full flow now with Richardson, Seymour, Dan Jones and Eddie Hart all coming close to creating a second on numerous occasions.
It therefore came as a surprise when former Colchester United midfielder Kemel Izzet gave Needham the lead for a second time when he sweetly struck into the top corner from outside the box.
Cowley almost extended the away side’s lead before Romford’s Scott Truman, who was otherwise excellent, was fortunate not to give away a penalty when tackling Sam Newson in the box.
With half time approaching Boro found another equaliser as their two brothers combined to make it 2-2 at the break.
Chris Barry curled in the corner and captain Jack powered home his header to ensure it was level at half time.
Romford were denied what seemed a certain penalty six minutes into the second period when Needham’s Sheridan Driver tripped Richardson in the box and the referee waved play on.
Oliver Fenn then came close for Needham. but Boro’s David Ottley scrambled his shot off the line before Newson cut inside and clipped the bar.
The game started to peter out, though, as first half goalscorers Izzet and Clayton picked up bookings before Romford manager Paul Martin introduced Nick Reynolds and George Woodward in hope of finding a late winner.
Woodward twice came close before Needham’s Nunn had a header saved by Omand with time running out.
And then in the fourth minute of injury time Richardson controlled Seymour’s pass, burst past his marker before slotting through the legs of Plummer and into the net.
Richardson’s strike sparked wild celebrations and although Ryan Charles tested Omand soon after the full time whistle soon followed to seal a superb sixth successive win for Romford, who host Redbridge next on Saturday.
Romford: Omand, Ottley, Dicks, Barry, Truman, Clayton, Barry (Woodward 84), Seymour, Jones, Richardson, Hart (Reynolds 79).
