Hornchurch striker George Purcell admitted it was a relief to get their first win of the season at VCD Athletic on Tuesday.

Purcell and Omar Beckles were on target in the victory as the Urchins built on an impressive performance in the 2-0 loss to big-spending Margate on Saturday.

And the striker is now hoping the club can put together a winning run to move themselves up the Ryman Premier table.

“We’ve got better over the last six or seven games, but either through individual or sloppy mistakes we haven’t quite got the results we wanted,” said Purcell.

“We played Margate and that was a big improvement and is probably the best we have played all season.

“We didn’t play as well against VCD as we did against Margate because on Saturday we were the better team for at least 70 minutes.

“We wasn’t quite up to that standard, but we came here and did a job and got the three points which is the main thing.”

Purcell hit the crossbar before he broke the deadlock on 10 minutes via a free-kick, and the striker felt from that moment on it was going to be a good night for the Urchins.

“Lately when I have been having shots they’ve been going just past the post or over and when I hit the bar I thought I had a good chance of scoring,” he added.

“I had that feeling it was going to come and luckily it did. Now I can just settle down, not worry about it and get some more.

“The wall jumped and it went underneath them, but I’ll take anything.

“All I want to do is score goals for the team so if I’m not doing that I’m letting myself and the team down.

“Hopefully we can push on from here and get ourselves up the table.”
