Striker Stefan Payne has left Hornchurch to sign a one-year deal with Conference Premier side Dover Athletic.

The 22-year-old was prolific in front of goal last season, netting 27 league goals as the Urchins just missed out on bouncing back to the Conference South at the first time of asking with a 3-0 Ryman Premier play-off final defeat to Lowestoft Town.

And though Hornchurch boss Jimmy McFarlane said an offer was on the table for Payne at Bridge Avenue for next season, there was always going to be others interested after Payne’s fine campaign.

The former Gillingham man joins the Whites on a free transfer following their promotion via the Conference South 1-0 play-off final win over Ebbsfleet United, another former club of the striker.

That victory on the day was secured by another former Urchin in the shape of Nathan Elder.

Payne was reportedly interesting local League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge last season, but no move ever materialised.
