London Div 1N: Romford & GP 14 Westcliff 15

Romford & Gidea Park gave London One North leaders Westcliff a fright before succumbing to a 15-14 defeat at Crow Lane.

Veteran Steve Barfoot opened the scoring with a try in the left corner, which Ross Inwood converted, to put the hosts on top at half time, as former chairman Glyn Johns celebrated his 75th birthday.

But Dave Cosgrove drove over for Westcliff in the second half and Bannister touched down on 69 minutes, with Jones converting.

Undeterred, Romford rallied and Ross Inwood slid over with five minutes left to level, before edging his side in front with a touchline conversion.

But Westcliff forced their way into the home half and won a penalty, which was successfully converted to leave Park with two bonus points for their efforts in a losing cause.

Manager Kevin Butler said: “It was a big test and I feel we passed that test. We were very unlucky not to get the win after a brilliant game.

“A lot of work was done during the winter while the pitches were out of action, with the boys training inside and on 3G pitches, and it has paid off.

“We go to Diss this weekend with a full squad hoping to get a win there for the first time in 14 years.”
