Boro face rivals Thurrock in critical Ryman North match

Romford are set to ‘host’ landlords Thurrock tomorrow (Saturday) and manager Paul Martin would be delighted to cause another upset.

Boro got the better of Fleet in both Ryman North clashes last season, recording 3-1 and 2-1 successes.

The latter victory was the eighth successive win for Martin’s team between March and April last season – an astonishing spell of results.

But Romford find themselves just four points above the relegation zone with the New Year on the horizon, so they would love to beat Thurrock at Ship Lane.

“No one expected us to beat Thurrock twice last season. On paper they have a better squad than us and a lot more money,” said Martin.

“We upset them twice last season and they did us in the cup this year, but I don’t mind that because the league is the priority.

“You look at our squad and we have quite a few Thurrock old boys. Jamie Dicks, Tom Richardson, Callum Ibe, who is suspended for this match, and Robbie Norris so they have all got a point to prove.

“I will be over the moon if we beat Thurrock and that is not a nice thing to say really because we ground share with them.

“I get on really well with their chairman Tommy South, but three points come first and the handshakes come afterwards.”

Perhaps now isn’t a bad time for Romford to play Fleet as Mark Stimson’s team have lost four of their last seven league fixtures.

Martin had also called on his players to act professionally over the Christmas period.

“If you look at Thurrock’s results they lost to Brentwood Town 3-2 and then, in a game you wouldn’t expect them to win, they beat Wroxham 3-0,” he added.

“It goes to show it is all about who turns up on the day and I have asked the boys to be professional over Christmas as well.

“We have fortunately got the game put back a day so they could enjoy a drink on Christmas Day and recover because I have asked them to be professional about it this year.”

Romford visit Great Wakering Rovers on New Years Day as well for another crucial match in the Ryman North.

But he is confident his team will get clear of the relegation zone soon, adding: “We will keep plugging away with it.

“Remember we lost a few last year before we went on that eight-match winning run so we know we are capable.

“The changing room, and player, confidence is sky high and we are just not getting the rub of the green, but we know it will change sooner rather than later.

“I believe we are good enough to get out of this trouble and that is why I won’t talk about relegation or being in the bottom three.”
