Ryman Premier preview: Hampton & Richmond Borough v AFC Hornchurch

Hornchurch make the trip to the Beveree Stadium tonight for a crucial Ryman Premier clash against inconsistent Hampton & Richmond Borough knowing they need to get back on the winning trail soon.

Manager Jimmy McFarlane was disappointed following their defeat to Grays Athletic on Saturday which made it one win in five league matches, albeit tough games.

And the Urchins manager will be doing his upmost to raise his troops for another tough match.

McFarlane said: “It is funny because when I use to play for Colin McBride (now Hornchurch chairman) he used to say ‘your job is to pick the players and the staff up but who picks you up?’

“But whether you do it through gritted teeth you have to pick yourself up and go again. There isn’t going to be an easy game, that was proven Saturday.

“I don’t fear anyone going away from home. It is when we play at home I wonder which side is going to turn up.

“I won’t be going there with any fear because on our day we are a match for anyone in this league but at our moment we are not making our day often enough.”

It could be an entertaining game for the neutral with forwards on either side enjoying excellent seasons in front of goal.

Stefan Payne and George Purcell have over 40 goals between them in the league whilst Hampton have reunited friends and dangerous forwards Charlie Moone and Dave Tarpey together.

McFarlane will be relying on his defence to stand firm and hopes to have Rickie Hayles back, while Chris Bourne should feature again after returning at the weekend. And it may not be the last player to sign on this season.

McFarlane added: “At 12 o’clock Friday with injuries I only had 11 and I didn’t want to let Chris go in the first place but he just needed to get his confidence going.

“He’ll be another good addition to the squad. I have been on the phone all week and so has the chairman so we’ll bring people in.”
