Quba Gordon and Ayrton Coley starred for Town on Saturday, but Borough still managed to win 3-2
Tom Loizou was relieved to see Haringey Borough reach the second qualifying round of the FA Cup with a 3-2 win at Brentwood Town on Saturday despite the best efforts of two old boys.
A crowd of 199 were treated to a thriller at the Arena with two late goals preventing a classic upset.
Georgios Aresti cancelled out Sam Carter’s early opener to make it 1-1 heading into the final 10 minutes.
It was here when Ayrton Coley scored for Brentwood against his old club with 81 on the clock, but thankfully for Borough, substitute Chinedu McKenzie equalised and then forward Femi Akinwande grabbed a winner in stoppage time.
Loizou said: “This is how football gets you. With four minutes to go, we were out of the tie and then a minute into time added on we have won it.
“I did feel the officials let everyone down. They got quite a bit wrong and it is the FA Cup so they should be sending the best referees because this competition means so much to little clubs like us and Brentwood.”
A topsy-turvy tie eventually went the way of the Bostik Premier outfit, but only after an almighty scare.
Loizou could see it happening and knew Brentwood would raise their game, so was thrilled to see his substitutes make a difference with McKenzie coming off the bench to level in the 88th minute before Akinwande secured a stoppage-time winner.
“We were the big scalp, so the small sides want to take us and it was a funny one,” Borough’s manager said.
“A player I released two weeks ago, Quba Gordon at the back for Brentwood, was man of the match for me.
“The other one I let go earlier in the season, Ayrton, scored their second goal and I could see it was going to happen.
“What can you do? They raised their game against us and we weren’t at the top of our game and we have had a lot of injuries, but I did try to keep it fresh and in the end we got it right. I think I got the substitutions right.”
