Ryman Div 1N: VCD Athletic 6 Romford 0

Romford were hit for six as Michael Power’s hat-trick helped VCD Athletic snatch the Ryman One North title in a thrilling climax to the regular season.

Table-topping Witham were held to a 1-1 draw at Cheshunt, which meant long-time leaders VCD leapt back to the summit to be crowned champions and gain automatic promotion.

But while the home side ended their campaign on a high, it was a sad conclusion for Romford.

Paul Martin’s men ended the campaign with a third successive defeat – and fifth loss in six games – but still managed to finish in 11th place with their best points haul (68) since their return to the Ryman League.

Martin wanted to spoil the party, but only four minutes had been played when Ben Payne put the home side ahead.

And Power doubled the VCD advantage from the penalty spot on 38 minutes to leave Boro with much to do in the second half.

Power made it 3-0 just before the hour and completed his hat-trick on 67 minutes, before Dean Carpenter got in on the act with a fifth for the hosts.

And substitute Bertie Brayley’s 90th-minute effort completed the home side’s half dozen as they clinched the title in style.

VCD Athletic: Blue, Williams, Nesbitt, Reeves, Payne, Thurgood, Carpenter, Dent (Brayley 75), Power (Stanley 70), Duckworth (May 70), Dawson. Unused subs: Powell, Manners.

Romford: Omand, Ottley, Woodward, J Barry, Truman, Clayton, Dicks (Oates 66), Ishmail, Reynolds (Thomas 73), Imbert, Richardson (Tranter 75). Unused sub: Redwin.
