Romford made a superb start to the new year with a vital victory at Parkside thanks to a double from debutant Jay Knight.

Paul Martin’s men had seen their relegation battle with fellow strugglers Norwich United postponed at the weekend due to a waterlogged Ship Lane pitch.

But they saw former Barking striker Knight open the scoring on 21 minutes and double their advantage just two minutes after the restart.

Glenn Poole hit back for the home side on 51 minutes, but Boro protected their lead in a tense second half for three valuable points in their battle to avoid relegation.

A second win in three matches allowed Romford to climb off the bottom of the table and above Cheshunt on goal difference, after the Ambers lost 1-0 at Hertford Town.

And Boro will hope to take another step towards safety when they welcome Brentwood next weekend, although should be wary after the Blues beat leaders Hornchurch 4-3 at Bridge Avenue.

Romford: S Reynolds, Olukoga, Mvemba, Cossington, Finneran, Coyne, Ishmail, Nzengo, Taylor, Knight, Daly. Unused subs: Atkinson, Perkins, Bichard, N Reynolds, Tombides.

Attendance: 219.
