Former West Ham United and Charlton Athletic midfielder Kevin George has written a book that takes a look at the hearts and minds of footballers at the top of the game.

Soccology is the debut book from George, and features 50 exclusive interviews with footballers past and present.

The interviews offer some fascinating insights into the mental challenges footballers face in their career.

In an emotional interview contained in the book, former Premier League footballer Leon McKenzie reveals he tried to take his own life following a battle with injuries, but returned to training with everyone at the club acting as if nothing had happened.

Former forward Marcus Gayle also explains the “banter culture” at Wimbledon and how one young player could not face training because of jokes about his mother.

Premier League champion Fabian Delph details how mindfulness and meditation has transformed his career, as well as the importance of the sports psychiatrist at Manchester City.

In another interview in the book, current Dutch international and PSV midfielder Bart Rameslaar states his belief that fans don’t understand how personal problems affect on-field performance, and how social media makes it impossible to escape.

Former Tottenham Hotspur youngster Owen Price also divulges the mental pressures he faced after signing a lucrative contract, and how he was victimised because he earned more than his coach.

Ex-France international Gael Clichy discusses the pressure to perform and the lack of emotional care in football.
