Essex’s Under-16s Girls have a national cup final to look forward to against Nottinghamshire at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on Saturday after a convincing 6-0 win over Kent at Harlow.

Katherine Gee and Miagh Downey both netted inside the first 40 minutes, while Hannah Humphries (twice), Shellie Sumpter and Evie Clarke all added to the score in the second half as Essex recorded a comfortable victory.

The game saw the sides put on a great demonstration of technique, grit and determination and Kent’s main threat was the dominating Alessia Russo, an English Schools Under-15 international.

Essex’s central midfield pairing of Emily Baker and Sophie Jones remained organised and disciplined throughout, cancelling out any threat and they took the lead on 13 minutes when Gee produced a memorable strike.

Maddie Scheffer, Lottie Wubben-Moy, Kelsey Kiely and Lucy Jones were resolute and soaked up a lot of Kent attacks, as the calmness of goalkeeper Imogen Riches rubbed off on the rest of the team.

Essex went 2-0 up before half time when Lucy Jones sent Downey through on goal for a fine finish.

And a pair of textbook finishes from Humphries saw them double their advantage after the restart, as Essex continued to play with flair.

Hard work from Sumpet saw her drive home the fifth before Clarke netted number six, after an intelligent run by Elisha Turner-Powell saw her shot parried.

Essex will travel up the M1 to the Midlands to try and retain the trophy they won last season, but they go up against a talented Nottinghamshire side.

Buses are leaving the Essex FA office in Chelmsford at 8.30am on Saturday, with a £10 fare charged.

The match kicks off at 1.45pm and there is an admission charge at the Ricoh Arena.

Essex: Beth Blacklock (St Benedict’s Catholic College), Elisha Turner-Powell (King John), Ellena Finneran (Notley), Emily Baker (Great Baddow), Evie Clarke (St Martin’s), Hannah Humphreys (Abbs Cross Academy), Imogen Riches (Moulsham), Katherine Gee (William Edwards), Katie Pounder (Shenfield), Kelsey Kiely (Ockendon Academy), Kelsey Smith (Marshalls Park), Lottie Wubben-Moy (Anglo European), Lucy Jones (St Bernard’s), Maddie Scheffer (Woodlands), Miagh Downey (Philip Morant), Shellie Sumpter (Hassenbrook Academy), Sophie Jones (King John).
