Oxford United boss Appleton keen to keep Daggers’ front three quiet

Oxford United boss Michael Appleton is wary of Dagenham & Redbridge’s front three as the two sides prepare to do battle tomorrow at the Kassam Stadium.

The U’s have lost all four league matches to date as they prop up the League Two table, but gave a good account of themselves in their penalty shoot-out defeat in the Capital One Cup to Premier League side West Brom.

But while happy with their showing at the Hawthorns and in their previous four league matches, which they have lost by the odd goal, Appleton would have ‘taken a hiding’ to ensure all three points tomorrow against the Daggers.

“If we were to get a hiding the other night but it meant we got the three points on Saturday I would’ve taken it all day, as much as it would’ve hurt me at the time,” said Appleton.

“The performances have been very good, but again I’ll take a horrendous performance on Saturday to get the three points.

“Regardless of how disappointed I’d be if we didn’t put in a performance, I would certainly sleep a lot better with three points on the board.”

Daggers go into the game themselves in some good form though, in particular on the attack.

And with the front three of Ashley Hemmings, Ashley Chambers and Jamie Cureton, Appleton feels his side have some big threats to deal with.

“The front three are lively and have bags of experience,” he added.

“Someone like Jamie Cureton thrives on people making mistakes and will play on the shoulder and expect people to mis-control balls and try and get on the end of things. We have to be careful of him, as with Chambers and Hemmings.

“We have to be careful and make sure if we have as much possession as we’ve had in the first few games that we don’t get too carried away, so if we do lose the ball we have to make sure we stop counter-attacks, because they’re very quick.”
