Michael Cheek struck late on as Dagenham & Redbridge earned their first win of pre-season with a 2-1 win at National League South outfit Eastbourne Borough.

John Still’s men trailed at the break, but Sam Ling got them back on level terms in the second half, before Cheek struck the winner.

The match had been arranged as part of the deal that saw striker Elliott Romain move to Victoria Road from the Sports last season.

Daggers keeper Mark Cousins started brightly at Priory Lane, making some impressive saves, but could do little about the opener in the 38th minute.

After Cousins saved expertly parried away a free kick, no defender was on hand to clear the ball, allowing Eastbourne’s Yemi Odubade to slam home the opener.

With 10 minutes left in the match, though, Ling embarked on a mazy run from full back, before cutting inside to score the equaliser.

The 20-year-old defender also had a hand in the winner seven minutes later, with Ling finding Mason Bloomfield in the box.

Bloomfield’s shot was saved by the Eastbourne keeper, but Cheek was on hand to score on the rebound.

Daggers held on in the remaining minutes to claim the win, and will hope for more success at home to League Two side Stevenage on Saturday.

Daggers (4-4-2): Cousins; Ling, N’Gala, Robson, Gordon; Wheeler, Hyde, Robinson, Howells; Romain, Cheek.

Subs: Justham, Mongoy, Okenabirhie, Bloomfield, Holmes.
