Pre-season friendly: Dagenham & Redbridge 0 Cambridge United 2 (Azeez 10, 90p)

Dagenham & Redbridge suffered their first pre-season defeat of the summer after going down 2-0 at home to Sky Bet League Two side Cambridge United.

The U’s took the lead in the 10th minute when Ade Azeez head home a corner from the right.

Daggers nearly delivered an immediate response when skipper for the night Gavin Hoyte delivered a teasing ball from the right a minute later.

Forward Michael Cheek seemed to have the goal at his mercy, but, with his weaker left foot, was unable to turn Hoyte’s pass into the back of the net.

With eight minutes remaining in the half, Daggers winger Chike Kandi drew a good parry from visiting custodian David Forde after a storming run down the right.

Cheek was next to test Forde in the 44th minute, but his attempt at diverting an Ollie Harfield cross from the let into the net was comfortable for the ex-Millwall man.

Taylor’s men were fortunate not to concede a second in the 52nd minute, but Liam Gordon was on hand to clear Matt Foy’s shot off the line after the former breezed through the home defence.

The teenager repeated the trick a minute later, with Gordon this time clearing an Azeez effort off his own line.

Two minutes later, Daggers substitute Matt Robinson tested Forde with a low effort from the edge of the box.

In the 70th minute, a dipping volley from Tom Knowles had home stopper Lewis Moore at full stretch, but the Daggers man was able to push the ball over for a corner.

From the resulting set-piece, Greg Taylor had a header blocked on the line by Gordon, before Liam O’Neill put the follow-up shot over the bar.

In the final minute of the match, Azeez doubled Cambridge’s lead from the penalty spot after Dagger substitute Charlie Hitch pulled back Knowles in the box.

Daggers end their pre-season campaign on Saturday when they visit Hemel Hempstead Town of the Vanarama National League South.
