Centre-back overcome shoulder injury to start against Port

Scott Doe is expected to recover from a shoulder injury in time to lead Dagenham & Redbridge out in their National League opener at home to Southport on Saturday.

The centre-back missed last Saturday’s 1-0 friendly loss at home to Wimbledon with the slight knock, but it is understood that was nothing more than a precaution.

Doe is expected to line up in the heart of defence alongside new signing Craig Robson, though Josh Staunton has certainly put pressure on the ex-Bognor Regis Town man after impressing against Dons.

Chris Assombalonga may have to wait for his first Daggers start after struggling on the right wing against the League One side, with Jordan Maguire-Drew, on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, likely to take his place.

Elliot Justham is understood to have edged Mark Cousins in the race to start in goal, while Curtley Williams and Joe Widdowson will occupy the full-back berths.

Andre Boucaud and Matt Robinson are likely to anchor Daggers’ midfield against the Port, with Luke Guttridge operating as the main playmaker while Fejiri Okenabirhie will want to provide the balls from the left wing for striker Oliver Hawkins.

Two players who will definitely miss out are defender Luke Pennell (ACL) and midfielder Luke Howell (knee), with both not expected to feature for some time yet.

Probable XI: Justham; Williams, Doe, Robson, Widdowson; Boucaud, Robinson; Maguire-Drew, Guttridge, Okenabirhie; Hawkins
