Dagenham & Redbridge: Sam Ling says he will look back on time with Daggers fondly after rejoining Leyton Orient

Young defender left Essex club to join National League rivals O’s for an undisclosed fee on Wednesday

Sam Ling says he enjoyed his time with Dagenham & Redbridge after leaving the Essex club to rejoin National League rivals Leyton Orient on Wednesday.

With a financial crisis currently engulfing Daggers, Ling departed to join the O’s for an undisclosed fee, penning a two-and-a-half year deal with the east Londoners.

In his time with John Still’s men, Ling made 40 appearances in the National League, scoring three goals.

This season had seen the 21-year-old cement his place as one of the first names on the team-sheet for the Victoria Road outfit, becoming a key figure in defence.

And Ling says he will always look back fondly on his time with Daggers now that he has left the club.

“I enjoyed my time at Dagenham a lot and playing games this season, though I wasn’t playing so much last season,” the attacking full back told the Leyton Orient website.

“This season has been good for me and I feel that I’ve been playing well. Now it’s time for a new challenge and that’s with Leyton Orient.

“I was delighted to get a call-up to the England C squad (earlier in the season), but that’s testament to how I’ve worked since I left Leyton Orient a couple of years ago and the progress I’ve made.”

With Glyn Hopkin having ceased his funding of Daggers, Ling’s departure was perhaps forced on the Essex club, who accepted an undisclosed fee from Orient for the promising defender.

However, in his first interview with the O’s since rejoining them, Ling revealed that Justin Edinburgh’s team were not the only club interested in acquiring him from Daggers.

“I had a few options from several clubs, but the offer from Orient, a club of that size and with everything they are doing at the moment, was too hard to say no to,” added Ling, who is the son of Orient director of football Martin.

“I’m familiar with the club and I’ve always been looking out for them. They’re in a good place and going in the right direction.”

Ling’s departure means Daggers will have to find someone else to feature at right back against Aldershot Town on Saturday.

The BT Sport cameras will be in town for that game as the Essex club look to end a difficult week on a high.
