FA Cup fourth qualifying round: Dagenham & Redbridge 3 (Okenabirhie 34, Hawkins 50, Maguire-Drew 75) Wealdstone 1 (Whichelow 45)
Dagenham & Redbridge progressed to the first round of the FA Cup after beating Wealdstone 3-1 thanks to the three frontmen, Fejiri Okenabirhi, Oliver Hawkins and Jordan Maguire-Drew.
John Still made three changes after last week’s 1-0 victory over Eastleigh. Youngster Sam Ling was replaced by Andre Boucaud, who made his return to the starting XI after missing two matches on international duty with Trinidad & Tobago.
Captain Scott Doe was absent in the Daggers’ last match due to a suspension, but he came in replacing Josh Staunton.
Mark Cousins earned some playing time, after Still opted to have him in goal rather than first choice Elliot Justham.
The visitors came out strong in the opening minutes of the game and with just eight minutes gone Jonny Wright was clear on goal and attempted to lob Cousins, who was off his line, but the shot ended up dipping just over the crossbar.
Five minutes later and Corey Whitely whipped a corner in for Hawkins, his header was then cleared off the line and out for a corner by Jonathan North’s acrobatic save.
Daggers then took the lead in the 31st minute when Hawkins played a clever ball through the legs of a defender to find Okenabirhie, who cut in and slotted it past North.
Moments before the goal, North suffered a concussion, but decided to play on. However in the 34th minute Paschalis Xanthos had to replace the Wealdstone first choice goalkeeper.
The visitors got a goal back just before half time after a speculative effort from Matt Whichelow, which took a deflection from Andre Boucaud and got the best of Cousins as the ball crept into the top left.
Daggers started the second half with more intensity, first half goal scorer, Okenabirhie managed to curl a shot from the left side of the box, however substitute goalkeeper Xanthos got a hand to it.
Xanthos couldn’t do anything in the 50th minute, though, when Hawkins headed the ball into the back of the net straight after a defensive error.
Whitely had a very good chance to score in the 64th minute, Okenabirhie crosses a low ball into the centre of the box, but the attacking midfielder was unable to keep his shot down.
A minute later and a great run from Whitely saw him clear on goal, unfortunately the shot was off target as it hit the side netting.
The Daggers were starting to take advantage as more chances where coming in, this time it was Boucaud who decided to have a low drill at goal from distance, which ended up going past the wrong side of the post.
Still then made his first change of the match in the 72nd minute as Luke Howell replaced Whitely.
The third eventually came as the Daggers extended their lead through Maguire-Drew with quarter of an hour remaining - the forward made a brilliant run showing great skill to get closer to the goal and chipping the ball over Xanthos.
Daggers will now be looking to continue their good form in the league as they take on Macclesfield at home on the 22nd October.
